...Says, "Hello, my brothers."MADEN, Turkey (AP) - Kurdish rebels reportedly raked a coffehouse withgunfire and executed elementary schoolteachers in a surge of attacks insoutheastern Turkey that killed nine people.
The overnight attacks followed an army crackdown on Kurdish rebels in Turkey'ssoutheast, and were seen as a show of strength by the rebels. The rebelshave staged similar attacks previously after reported army successes.
The rebels raked a coffeehouse with gunfire in Maden, 480 miles east ofAnkara, killing two civilians and wounding 16 other people, including sixpolicemen, the Anatolia news agency said today.
In nearby southeastern Diyarbakir province, the rebels dragged four teachersfrom their homes and executed them on the outskirts of Hantepe village,the agency said.
The guerrillas target teachers in an effort to disrupt the state educationsystem in the Kurdish-dominated southeast.
They have killed over 50 teachers and burned down several schools in thepast three years. The Kurdish language is banned in education.
In another attack in Diyarbakir, three private guards were killed and twoothers were kidnapped from the base of a state-owned dam, Anatolia said.The motive for attacking the dam was unclear.
Kurdish guerrillas began fighting for autonomy in Turkey's southeast in1984. The war has killed more than 21,000 people.
