Turkish Kurdish Rebels Reportedly Kidnap Two German Tourists

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Turkish Kurdish rebels were holding an Iranianand two German tourists hostage today after kidnapping them in southeasternTurkey, where rebels have been fighting for autonomy.

The Turkish daily newspaper Hurriyet reported today that a group of Kurdishrebels stopped a passenger bus near Bingol province early Monday and seizedthe foreigners.

The bus was en route to the eastern city of Van on the Iranian border. Thecity's lake had been a popular tourist attraction, but the flow of visitorsslowed dramatically in recent years with the Kurdish insurrection,

A German Embassy spokesman said he read about the report in the newspaperbut was not able to get further information. A local official, speakingon condition of anonymity, confirmed the kidnapping.

The names of the captives were not available.

Western countries, including the United States, have issued security noticesagainst the risks of traveling to Turkey's southeast.
