AJACCIO, Corsica Three bombs exploded before dawn Tuesday on thisFrench Mediterranean island, virtually destroying a City Hall and damagingseveral villas in the latest attacks blamed on separatist militants.
A strong blast blew apart the City Hall in Zonza just after midnight andslightly damaged a nearby post office and several houses. Nobody was injured.
As with many attacks on Corsica, no one immediately claimed responsibilityfor the blast. But Zonza's mayor, Sebastien de Rocca-Serra, had been thetarget of an assassination attempt last year by Corsican separatists, whohave been fighting for independence for more than 20 years.
Rocca-Serra belongs to the governing Gaullist party of conservative PrimeMinister Alain Juppe, who pledged last month to crack down on Corsican separatistsafter they bombed the City Hall of Bordeaux.
Most separatist attacks have targeted government offices or tourist spotson the island.
